From the province of Mendoza comes Downbeat Dub, a four member live band with a twist! Emi Bless (Drum & SetLive), Jah Sound (Bass & Synth), Coco (Guitar) and Eter Dub (Keys & Brass) are mixing organic sounds with some heavyweight dubwise business. "Electrorgánico" is the name of their first digital release on Dubophonic. Half organic and half electronic, Latin America is cultivating indeed some serious dub vibes and is establishing itself in the world dub map!

"Electrorgánico" is also the name of their style, the result of their passion and commitment to explore dub music and introduce some new musical paths. The four musicians from Argentina are passionate and dedicated to the study and live performance of dub music.

Their album is an amalgamation of many elements: analog meets digital, organic meets electronic, ethnic meets dub.
Starting with Coco's guitar healing the nation, the journey continues with some funky dub sounds leading to an inside upliftment. Only to pause for some inspiration through the musically artistic interludes, admiring the view from the high mountains of Aconcagua, the journey continues in an everlasting musical creation. You are invited to join the journey and be a part of their world.

“La Quiete d’Oro” (Golden Quietness) is the first track of the set. Spacey guitar and infinite notes not so distant from Michael Brook’s masterpieces, Lenzi takes us on an airborne trip across the sky, and it is very easy to close one’s eyes and watch imaginary landscapes where there’s no horizon between the land and the sky and one merges into another. Spacey, rhythm-less sounds that expand time and make you wish this track had no end.

“Indietronika” is a symphony of reverberation and sound effects. Are we in a cave close to the centre of the earth, or the inside of a giant, abandoned starship from another world, or maybe a forest of sentient metals and crystals? No need to ask, no need to worry. Just let yourselves be carried away into this vortex of pure sounds, it’s worth the trouble.

“Vintage Kling-Klang Machine” is a one-minute interlude with sparse electronic sounds. A rest after the trip so far, if you like, before we continue our voyage into the psychedelic worlds of Lenzi’s music.

“Phoenix Rising” opens with an ominous sense of impending doom. Deep, dark sounds, unhindered by the logic of rhythm, for rhythm would compress the mind into the forced ways of logic, whereas everything is malleable and expanded here. That sense of gentleness of the first two tracks is absent here, everything dark and whispering. Just think of a storm brewing up in the air, and you’ll get the idea.

Can love be psychedelic? Can psychedelia be sentimental? Of course it can, although the only love song possible will necessarily be unconventional. This is what “Unconventional Lovesong” seems to tell us, with his sounds, loops, delays and effects. Sweet textures, very ambient in their essence, but not so ambient as to be relegated as music for lifts. These sounds come to the front and speak right to our minds and hearts. Music to listen to at sunset? Yes, if the sunset we’re thinking of is a Philip K. Dick sunset, of course, in a world where androids dream of electric sheep.

With “Space Sirtaki” we have the first encounter with something definable as rhythm, although created by guitars and bass and loops. A series of guitar chords looped into a dervish-like dance for automatons gyrating in a huge hall, or a labyrinth at the centre of which not a minotaur, but a baby black hole waits.

As the title suggests, “Paesaggi Paradisiaci” (Paradise Places) is a very spacey, ambient guitar track with airy chords and arpeggios. If a synth swooped in, such a track as this could be called cosmic. The mood is quiet, relaxed and luminous throughout. An oasis floating in the air. A painting by Roger Dean. The flight of a butterfly slowed down one hundred times, a fresh waterfall in the midst of an uncharted forest, this is what this track is like.

“Can you imagine a Psychedelic Island?” asks the title of the next track, and a jolly good question it is. What would it be like? I guess many of you would think of a sort of Woodstock-meets-Monterey kind of things. Well, Lenzi seems to have quite a different idea, my friends. The mood is very somber here and the atmosphere is dark. Not unfriendly, but forget the colours of Grateful Dead or Joan Baez’s gentleness. Dark, sinister sounds, much more like the hole Alice fell in that the wonderland she found after her bum bumped onto the underground soil.

“Sundrone,” a feast of looping, disturbing, distorted sound and metallic chords. It could be doom if there was a rhythm track, but since there is not, it is ….. doom all the same, maybe of a post- type. Droning psych metal? Why not?

How can one not love maestro Erik Satie, the man who replied “In the form of pear” to some dickhead music academic who’d asked him what form his songs were in? Lenzi pays homage to the French composer with the track “To Erik Satie”, in which he recaptures the Satie’s light but esoteric spirit. No piano, of course. Just a guitar that weaves chords upon chords. Thinking of Robin Guthrie here would not be blasphemy.

“Walking through the Hall of the Holy Mountain” is the closing track on this beautiful release. The droning, looping sounds are wonderfully descriptive and, while listening to this track, it’s easy to feel tiny and in the middle of an enormous hall built in the heart of a mountain. Distorted guitar notes whirl and soar, in a vertigo of sensations that are the essence of what we call psychedelia. Then, towards the end of the track, all the fury subsides and finally turns into an otherworldly lullaby for the psychically enhanced which ends abruptly, leaving us listeners senseless but happy. Soberly happy.

And now for some credits:

This album is a selection of live, improvised music performed and recorded in Arkösund and Stockholm in Sweden in January 2015.
Each piece starts as a blank canvas.
I play a few notes into a long, slowly decaying loop (or loops) and see where the music takes me.
A big thank you to everyone in Arkösund for their generosity.<p>Tags:<a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/browse/release/tag/experimental">EXPERIMENTAL</a>, <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/browse/release/tag/ambient">AMBIENT</a>, <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/browse/release/tag/electronic">ELECTRONIC</a>, <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/browse/release/tag/drone">DRONE</a>, <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/browse/release/tag/improvisation">IMPROVISATION</a>, <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/browse/release/tag/live">LIVE</a>, <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/browse/release/tag/chillout">CHILLOUT</a>, <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/browse/release/tag/soundscape">SOUNDSCAPE</a>, </p><p>License: <a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0">Creative Commons | by-nc-nd</a></p><p>m3u: <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/get/release/m3u/19785">http://sonicsquirrel.net/get/release/m3u/19785</a><br />zip: <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/get/release/zip/19785">http://sonicsquirrel.net/get/release/zip/19785</a></p><p>Release page: <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/detail/release/Twilight+Sessions+volume+15/19785">http://sonicsquirrel.net/detail/release/Twilight+Sessions+volume+15/19785</a><br />Label page: <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/detail/label/BFWrecordings/1188">http://sonicsquirrel.net/detail/label/BFWrecordings/1188</a></p>

Visionary and unclassifiable, Volt Compound is the musical history of Flat Nandez. Influenced by almost everything: house, swing, blues, techno, funk, but also

television and poetry – Flat Nandez simply pursues an ideal aesthetic made of surprising contrasts. Raw and refined, his work integrates every kind of sound source

with an impressionistic attitude. The interaction between man and machine encounters instrumentalism in an interdisciplinary and multicultural environment.

Flat Nandez aka Rafael Fernandez has Spanish and German roots and is based in Zurich. He is a one man band combining electronics with grooves from the 80s, 70s, 60s

or even earlier with character that seems to disappear in music nowadays. As alternative to average digitalism, he captures the perfect fusion between acoustic,

electric and analogue instruments. Music business and fame are not the main focus, Rafael is authentic and concentrates rather on groove and dirt.

Cover art by Alina Yudina.

Quite a change of pace from recent BFW releases. Voda-i-Ryba, now based in Saint Petersburg, combine indie, post rock, jazz and blues into something that is somehow both intimate and epic.
EP America. Melancholic and hearty, but nervous homage to the culture of the Continent from New England to Mississippi. Devoted to William Faulkner, Robert Frost, Edward Hopper and Grant Wood.

Voda-i-Ryba (Fish and Water) was founded in the city of Krasnodar (The South of Russia). In 2011 Voda-i-Ryba recorded two EPs – Warsaw and Better Times. In 2013 band removed into the city of Saint-Petersburg.

Music of band is mix of dark indie rock and trip-rock with influences of other styles (like alt-country, avant-rock, psychedelic rock), gloomy guitar and taut female vocal. In heart of Voda-i-Ryba are lyrics poems of Russian poet Ivan Beletsky, translated into English.<p>Tags:<a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/browse/release/tag/trip%20hop">TRIP HOP</a>, <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/browse/release/tag/jazz">JAZZ</a>, <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/browse/release/tag/indie">INDIE</a>, <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/browse/release/tag/rock">ROCK</a>, <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/browse/release/tag/trip%20rock">TRIP ROCK</a>, <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/browse/release/tag/alt-country">ALT-COUNTRY</a>, </p><p>License: <a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0">Creative Commons | by-nc-nd</a></p><p>m3u: <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/get/release/m3u/19775">http://sonicsquirrel.net/get/release/m3u/19775</a><br />zip: <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/get/release/zip/19775">http://sonicsquirrel.net/get/release/zip/19775</a></p><p>Release page: <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/detail/release/America+EP/19775">http://sonicsquirrel.net/detail/release/America+EP/19775</a><br />Label page: <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/detail/label/BFWrecordings/1188">http://sonicsquirrel.net/detail/label/BFWrecordings/1188</a></p>

The diverse producer renders a lot of energy and happiness with his sample-heavy and fast-paced tracks. Influenced by Hip-Hop, Dubstep, Footwork and Jungle, Machette’s broken beats and easygoing melodies are just perfect for a dance in the sunshine or the ghetto. Get ready for a special sample odyssey…
The French musician started producing back in 2000 and released his take on Drum’n’Bass under the pseudonym Chomp. Then Jean Trubert went on a successful excursion into Electro with three EPs on the Austrialian label Idiot House. Inspired by the Footwork wave he rediscovered his interest for the Bass Music realm. Earlier this year he released his interpretation of Ghetto-Jungle on the “Vapor EP” on Vitalistik Records as well as “It’s Right And It’s Ok EP” on Dred Collective. Machette’s Bass Music baggage is bursting at the seams. So the Berlin based netlabel is more than happy to welcome another electronic musician with a distinct voice in its fast-growing family.<p>Tags:<a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/browse/release/tag/electronic">ELECTRONIC</a>, <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/browse/release/tag/bass">BASS</a>, <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/browse/release/tag/germany">GERMANY</a>, <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/browse/release/tag/france">FRANCE</a>, <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/browse/release/tag/berlin">BERLIN</a>, <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/browse/release/tag/juke">JUKE</a>, <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/browse/release/tag/footwork">FOOTWORK</a>, </p><p>License: <a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0">Creative Commons | by-nc</a></p><p>m3u: <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/get/release/m3u/19769">http://sonicsquirrel.net/get/release/m3u/19769</a><br />zip: <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/get/release/zip/19769">http://sonicsquirrel.net/get/release/zip/19769</a></p><p>Release page: <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/detail/release/Flavors+EP/19769">http://sonicsquirrel.net/detail/release/Flavors+EP/19769</a><br />Label page: <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/detail/label/Yarn_Audio/1689">http://sonicsquirrel.net/detail/label/Yarn_Audio/1689</a></p>

In the best science fiction tradition, the theme of this concept album is alien abductions, something which, we are sure, will interest more than some of you out there. The music is what you might call dark ambient, but there are also sprinklings of ‘old-time’ electronica that widen the sound palette and make this release a very enjoyable trip to the recesses of unknown galaxies and back.

Our visitors arrive “From the Pleiades,” as the title of the opening track specifies. Electronic sounds and droning swoops and swooshes create the atmosphere of a starship taking off, then some rhythm dictates the pace, until everything seems to stop. The sound here is that of static and some ping that could well be a sort of alien pager in search of the best victim to abduct. More swooshes of deep sounds add to the ominous nature of the moment.

The victim has been identified and everything’s ready for the “Abduction.” Electronic crescendos of chords and drones introduce us to a beat following which it is easy to visualise these alien forms moving from room to room of the victim’s house until the contact is made. Each sound is now in the background, as the unconscious victim is taken away from his house and into another world.
On the alien starship, the victim wakes up and, understandably enough, he is “Afraid of those Silhouettes.” There is no melody or harmony here. Everything is dissonant and discordant so as to better underline the state of hopelessness the victim finds himself in. He looks this way and that at those alien silhouettes, he cries, or tries to, but vision and sounds are distorted as in the worst LSD nightmare (Albert Hoffmann RIP). Each attempt at establishing any connection fails and desperation is the only thing that’s left.

The starship takes off. A Babel of incomprehensible voices crowd in while “Leaving the Earth.” Drones and soundscapes step in once the starship leaves our atmosphere and plunges into interstellar space. Some rhythm kicks in, as if to give the feeling of the voyage, and a semblance of a harmonic riff counteracts, with its message of serenity, the anguish of the victim, strapped on his prison/bed.

“On their Planet” the sounds are like clusters or distant radio signals. Giant crystal buildings or bottomless granite caves, purple rivers flowing under black skies where shapeshifting satellites create living patterns. Then, a melody appears. The welcome fanfare for the starship with the alien specimen on board, for we are as alien to them as they are to us. Expectably enough, the melody is arcane, dimensionless and magic.

The toll of a bell announces the time for experiments has come. The starship’s was no pleasure cruise at all. The specimen is here and the work begins. “Their Blood mixed with mine,” for that’s the nature of the experiment. The alien world is doomed to extinction because of an unprecedented epidemics of sterility that they cannot cure, for all their technologically advanced capabilities. A human specimen is needed in order to see if the alien race can be transplanted into our species and thus survive. Alien blood is transfused into the victim’s body and circulation and the operation is underlined by a wide array of electronic sounds and patterns that in parts can even remind us of old, glorious Kosmiche Kuriere. At the end of the operation, the only thing left to the aliens is to wait and see how the specimen will react, hoping for no rejection.

“I woke up … not a Human anymore” The victim wakes up. Voices and shapes whirl around him. He’s not sure about himself anymore. The only thing he’s certain of, he’s not fully human anymore. The sounds are dark and ominous, there’s no melody in this reawakening, the victim is surrounded by the alien doctors, they all discuss about him in their guttural voices. The moment he realizes he can discern some words now and then is when desperation really gets hold of him. He tries to unstrap himself from his bed, a syringe puts him to sleep again.

“Coming Home” The victim is coming home. He has no memory of what the alien doctors have done to him, but he understands things are not the same they used to be until but one day before. Something he couldn’t say or explain. Something he can only feel circulating within himself and in the new, enhanced way his senses seem to work. This new vision of things which won't necessarily be a good thing for him and, perhaps especially, for who's waiting for him at home, a reflection which fills him with grief. This is why he can say “I see the world with different eyes, new eyes…or are they old eyes?” for sometimes the most developed civilizations are also the most ancient ones and the concept of old and new merge into one, as the music in this final track does, with its huge slabs of electronics counterpointed by slabs of electric guitar. Will the aliens succeed in their attempt at saving themselves from extinction by engrafting us?

He started making beats and gradually diving into the world of fine music production at the early age of 14, inspired by the works of Armin van Buren. Three years later he has already gained a considerable fanbase and sports releases on labels such as 3886, Se7enth Fury Grammaton, Enchanted and Lungfiller Records.

He started with 4/4 oriented styles and had a succesful early career with excursions in more than one EDM genre. However for a couple of months now his focus has been circling over melodic Drum & Bass. And aside from stereotypical features of the modern young EDM producer/DJ (such as digital DJ-performances and multi-genre-capabilities) he displays some rather unusual characteristics... Being interested in vocals and musicality, he has done a huge load of Drum & Bass remixes of pop music tunes (partaking in numerous remix competitions and getting experience). He also managed to bring his production skills up to par over a really short period of time. What's more, he makes proper musical tunes on his own devices. And he keeps refusing to put his tunes into DJ-compatible structures, explicitly striving to make songs rather than formulaic tracks and keeping them short and sweet with the opposite of repetition overkills.

Approaching the end of 2014, Aljosha Konstanty began to sign tunes to the netlabel
Surreal Recordings, and also with one of its business partners, edm.com and drumnbass.net in order to further his career. Both these websites deliver huge numbers of tunes categorized in almost two dozen genres without applying sub-generic distinctions within these genres anymore. Both websites are also outlets of artistintelligence.agency, which again is a data collection node of a Denver, Colorado based company named "The EDM Network, LLC" that is in the process of swallowing bunches of EDM-relevant domain names in its mission to expand its "reach and influence" to basically enact its "philosophy and vision for the future of EDM" via infiltrating users' machines by gaining access to their social network accounts. They are basically the antithesis to both artists marketing themselves.

In other words, there are companies today that play a role somewhat similar to that of the major labels in the old music industry - that is, they openly attempt to actually shape and dominate the market for particular styles of music in complete disregard of their respective history, traditionally relevant labels, figureheads and developments in the scene at grassroots level. They collect artists like assets, operate on the sole basis of numbers and project the usual artificial image of customer friendliness. In the end it is no different from what happens to ALL fields of productivity and industry on this planet when they fall prey to industrialisation and mass monetarisation - monopolies take over, and the inevitable outcome is merciless mechanisation and standardisation of content production.

With the music industry in particular, the Internet had set the major label's monopolisation attempts back for roughly a decade and had even started to gradually bring them down - only to give way to a worse kind of monopolisation now. And the strategies applied by these companies include (among giving free tunes out, like many traditional labels have taken to) gaining access to user's scial media accounts. They use the users' uncritical indifference towards the actual sources of the (musical) products they consume, similarly to other industrial branches and markets. This may have an (un)foreseeable impact on electronic dance music itself (across many genres) and consecutively on rave culture.

Presently, EDM.com and assorted affiliates are one of the new big industrial players on the EDM market that emerged from the impact of the Xth wave seminal, true post-neurostep mainstream playaz (such as Skrillex, Deadmau5, Feed Me and Noisia). Those companies are currently in the process of finally establishing a "new" business model to this market (former scene) - a global commercial multigenre music outlet chain for producers and their tunes that is neither a label nor even trying to appeal to the traditional scenes of the respective music genres (not to their fanbase and not to their established players). As a matter of fact, this business model is entirely not new. Some 8 years ago, Digital-Tunes.net emerged as a promising startup and challenged Beatport's dominating position on the digital (DJ-)music sales market with various details of business conduct, one of them being the releasening of exclusive material (which is how Materia's epic tune "React" finally became accessible to the general public), and there are doubtless many more examples on a smaller and probably also bigger scale.

Perhaps these new companies today will end up breeding a new community which may be practically removed from the circles that once defined music scenes; but hopefully not completely governed by market law (the law of money) either. Fans/producers surrounding companies rather than older DJs/producers could well give rise to an entirely "new" form of counter culture (in fact many works science fiction went into this) that might be the best caricature of marxist logic in the music industry yet. Just as death provides ground for new life (one of the oldest "secrets" among traditional cults and wisdom schools - death and antagonism expressing into the literal bearers of new material life, whereas oneness rather tends to transcend timespace and cyclic materialisation habits towards Jacob's ladder, according to a long dominant european school). Either way, in this musical new world the Internet is as finished or not finished as all netlabels within the Drum & Bass scene, whatever that is. So all that's really left is to continue business as usual while hailing the better choices among the stars of tomorrow - and AK aka Aljosha Konstanty certainly should be one of them. His milestone "Philosophy" is ample proof of that, but you should check out his other tunes on his Soundcloud profile as well, many of them being free downloads. This release here is just two of them.

Anniversary EP http://sonicsquirrel.net/detail/release/Anniversary+EP/19746 Sun, 08 Mar 2015 21:17:06 +0100 <h5>released on toucan music by JMD</h5><img src="http://media.sonicsquirrel.net/image/release/19746_RS_75.jpg" /><br /><p>released on toucan music by JMD</p>For our tenth anniversary release, Aerologic and Dreamworld have remixed the two tracks from our very first netlabel release back in 2005. Thirty One is given the Aerologic treatment and the original uplifting melody is brought right up to date with sharp progressive house beats, grinding bass sounds, soaring pads and plenty of reverb. In recognition of our beginnings in the 1990s rave scene, Dreamworld have remixed Formation in a frenetic UK hardcore style, driving up the tempo and adding bouncy stab patterns and rippling acid riffs. In traditional Toucan style, both tracks are free to download and re-use in your own mixes and videos under a Creative Commons licence.

He is an underground musician with a small town Punk/Hardcore band background who branched out into electronic music production back in the 90s, inspired by early Autechre, Aphex Twin, Ma:ssive Attack, Speedy J and more experimental acts, and finished his first solo album "Hoffen" in 2001, before the arrival of the term "emo" in the local scene and after several years of work.

Some of the tunes originally came into existence on an old cassete multitracker from an analog drumcomputer (Yamaha RY30) and instrumental & vocal recordings, at a time when the term "Internet" was known only to some thousands of PC nerds worldwide. In the process, Christian began to experiment with digital sequencing via a very limited DOS tracker. He eventually switched over to a more complex tool named Acid and continued to use a lot of self-recorded guitar and bass guitar riffs and samples together with one-shots and pieces from Rebirth and the likes, finding his own aesthetics on an exploratory journey through different methods of sound creation.

When the tunes were fully developed and the album was ready, Christian distributed selfmade copies among friends and in the local scene (proper hardcore). He also sent some copies to magazines and labels and scored reviews in the "Sonic Seducer" und "Black" magazines (which are long lost by now - only few traces remain online). At that time, the advent of the mp3 scene was well underway and the music market became increasingly tighter; at any rate "Hoffen" was not picked up by labels. In 2003 it received a significant touching up, which did not change the market situation either. The album remained unreleased, safe for the local copies from 2001. Ebene X did not become a rich and famous name. So he continued to create music in his free time for himself, as a hobby, until this day.

In the millenium years he made a good bunch of Techno and Drum & Bass influenced tunes, and ended up putting a bunch of them online via Last.fm. Shortly after, he made a rather unlucky experience with a commercial digital label which led to him basically abandoning his old moniker and staying offline for a while. But he eventually resurfaced, with some of his ideas put loosely into Drum & Bass forms, and started uploading music again under the new name of KoolaKooka. He also uploaded a half electronic/crossover German "Downer Rock" mini-album as Alltagskopf most recently.

Despite almost 20 years of practical experience in making music on- and offstage, and connections to other artists and people in the industry who conveyed to him the practical merits of industry standards many a time, Christian still displays little intention to follow stylistic trends and equally close to no motivation to make dancefloor compatible tunes. Although often playing with forms of dancefloor music genres, he keeps aiming at homelistening mixdowns and expressing inner states rather than trying to abide by clubtrack guidelines, as if being his own target audience. His focus remains on creating and "breaking" riffs more than on drum tracks. The result is lovely deep, playful music flowing from gaping cracks in unsuspiciously generic rhythmical background textures; esoteric in many respects.

Seemingly uninterested in public success, the Internet clearly is the perfect place for Ebene X. Enjoy these 10 lost pieces of music (in their 2003 versions) from a forgotten era when netlabels were invisible nerdfests hidden in dark corners online, making tunes required special equipment and vinyl & dubplates were the only means of getting them played in clubs! Just close your eyes and think of...
