In this very short and minimal release, the guitar and home objects recordings from Nicola Ratti are granulized and de-composed by Sparkle in Grey.
On the other side, Nicola Ratti takes his gentle guitar and re-plays a completely different version of "A Flat Day" form Sparkle in Grey The Echoes of Thiiings album, also changing the lyrics into "What did you say, in a Flat Day?", simply beacause (he explained) I couldn't understand what Hue was singing in the original version.

The Nicola Ratti's song is available also into the Fadiiing Echoes CD issued by Afe Records.

"I met this duo from Florence in the iXem forum, that they left quite early in 2001, if I well remember, and I relly loved their music. When I wanted to start the remix contest for 'The Echoes of Thiings', they were the first guys I contacted, and they sent me this great versions of the song. I may say that the 'melodic' mix is much better than my original one, and it's a so nice song that they played it live a lot of times during their tours (see here under)" (Hue, 2007)

3 April 2004: Ether played live "Child Mix" from Sparkle in Grey!

The italian laptop duo Ether, with their friend Biga (turntables) and VJ Virgilio (visuals) played live as Cineplastico at the party for the inauguration of "Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea" (Cinisello Balsamo).

The concert was great, and the four Italian artists performed an astonishing remix of Sparkle in Grey song "When I'll be Child" at the end of the concert.
We were really happy for it! Thanks.

After their live gig, a live performance of Berlin duo Rechenzentrum closed the happening, and it also was great.

Amaranta Records's first release is a single of sheer noisy experimentation, which is valuable (assuming it is) precisely because of its nihilism. With Condiciones de contorno, Gurb is not trying to achieve anything at all. Starting with a brief sample of noise and using only the shareware version of a piece of granular synthesis software (with help from a simple loop in the case of 'Bizarre input'), Gurb conduces two little noisy experiments driven by improvisation and with no particular pourpose. Condiciones de contorno is not a landmark record. It's been recorded merely as a way to relieve tensions and have something to start a netlabel with, no more no less. Anyway, at least it's free. And the cover is beautiful.

Engrossing Amaranta Records` catalogue here is this collection of minimal guitar and melodica tunes, five cuts born to intimacy, improvised expressions extracted out of tedium, of inarticulated melancholies. Recorded in ö's bedroom sometime in the autumn of 2006, 'Sin palabras' (no words) is definitely honest with its own inexperience and limitations, aiming to be barely nothing, but much more than just emotional relief.

So in retrospective it presents the first DLR-release ever made. Definitly check out ARGUMENT, a kicking LoFi-piece, and HOLY MOUNT ZION, still one of the deepest DLR tracks ever. Following Phonocake's limited cassette-only release, number 51 in the catalogue is another online release. Behind the Pseudonym KERN we introduce another highly active electronic musician from Dresden, who is mainly known in town for his livesets. This release, his online-debut, besides his track at Phonocake's latest compilation, is fittingly a recording of a liveset by the artist, recorded in the relaxed atmosphere of a sit-in-club 'Altes Wettbüro', located in one main part of Dresden - the Neustadt. In his liveset, KERN succeeds to build a rising action upon HipHop-Downbeats, who brings to an expedition in sound. It's quite a homogenous piece of work for the sitting-room minds, which is nevertheless diversified, without being presumptuous. From threateningly Sci-Fi Sound-constellations at the beginning the Set shapes up around slowly n dark Elektro up to melancholic melodies, which are carried by unobtrusive beats.

The three tracks by Trans Alp are all characterized by a sinister atmosphere. However, alternating song structures and a wide palette of genres and elements make each of the tracks a very different experience. While "Geister" is marked by rather pensive melancholy, sugared by the guitar and the gentle melody, "Blub" lives from a dark. decisiveness, underlined and put into effect by a spheric bass and elektro reminiscences. The German vocals of "Die Gedanken sind frei", the lyrics of a well-known German folk song, and the voice reciting them, are put into a heavy contrast to the fatalistic background, which may remind some listeners of an Ennio Morricone atmosphere.

With the intro track "effixx", it takes Mr. Incognito roughly a minute to open up a world of noises, an exploration of spheric sounds, letting the listener wander through areas structured by noise and machine sounds, almost as if s/he was the only remaining human being in a world inhabited by robots: hydraulic systems, engines, picker arms, performing their tasks unaffected by the observer - a vision that does not convey fear, but much rather raises curiosity within the fascinated, uninvolved observer and lets him (or her) put the Mecanik EP on repeat for further exploration of the created acoustic space.

This release is a kind of a prereleased soundtrack for an experimental video by graphic artist Stefan Pautze, which was released at Phonocake in late 2009.
This remix project is based on Skies Unlimited's song for this video. Started in 2005 it was frozen until its release in september 2007. Many of Phonocake´s friends are concerned on this release. Besides this we are very happy about a guest-remix from Analogue Audio Association, one of the best-known Dresden's Electronic local heros. There are no poetic concepts behind the name »Staubkaskade«. The german name »Staubkaskade« means the cascade and its dust. Dust is the mathematical conception for a set of nonconnected points. The cascade is a synonym for the principle of recursion. This is a function which calls itself again and again. In fact fractals are nothing new. They appear in pictures since many years. But there is more behind this. It's a mathematical set for describing complex structures. This could be coastlines, clouds, mountains, plants, vascular systems, growth processes, stock-exchange prices or the allocation of material in the outer space. It is just a little step from this to the assumption, that the main principle of fractals must be fixed in the world of architecture. The meaning of Stefan Pautze`s project 'Staubkaskade' is to get to the bottom of this priniple.

Right on time to start off the New Year and to celebrate the six-month anniversary of Phonocake, Bad Comfort presents the "Postplatz EP", four tracks that were created in the Audiolab during the summer, the Audiolab serving as a communication platform, a sound workshop and a summer resort for creators and fans of electronic music on quite a few Sunday afternoons, and by the by also as the birthplace of Phonocake. The EP contains four tracks that capture the atmosphere of the Sundays spent in the Audiolab, four tracks that transport the listener back to the small room at the Postplatz, stuffed with people and technical equipment, and let him (or her) look out onto the pavement, bathed in sunlight, and at the passers-by, who are looking back curiously. Calm, at times playful melodies and relaxed (and relaxing) rhythms are embedded in a Dresden Postplatz soundscape, thus documenting the musical meet-ups, the jam sessions, the weather, the coffee and the (phono-)cake.As a kind of present on the occasion of the half-year-long existence of Phonocake, we'll toss in a video by Graf which features a walk across the Postplatz, giving a wonderful visual impression of the Audiolab atmosphere. Bad Comfort's music accompanies the video, the camera work was done by Graf, as was the cutting, with plenty of assistance by Home4.

After his EP 'Speicher' let quite a few of the Phonocake listeners soar in the heights of (somber) bliss, Trans Alp comes back for moreHis EP 'Strom' features 5 tracks, again possessing plenty of potential to speed up a music lover’s heart rate. Each of the tracks follows a basic musical idea, each of those being quite comprehensible. The simple, loping and hopeful melody of the first track 'Krauwt' starts out promising enough, before it conjoints with a heavy, irregular beat around minute 3, building up the atmosphere to the EP to come. Traces of optimism will quickly leave you in the 'Lied der Bergarbeiter' (miners’ song), where drums like on a slave galley bring you down, pulling you deep beneath the earth to create a somber surrounding like you’d probably have it in a dark, sweat-smelling mine only. You can positively hear the hammering, the work deep beneath the ground and the faint clicks of metal hitting stone when embarking onto the lorry taking us through the mountains. It gets more playful and ambient during 'Sternzwirn' (star twine). The fourth track, 'Rück', was created with the plucked string synthesizer Mutant Koto, imparting a rather unique sound. Finally, 'Melo' is built up and down again continuously to give the EP a contemplative ending with a few well-placed experiments.

While Rydox shared two single tracks with the Phonocake listeners at his last release (see Phonocake release #11), he is now presenting an entire EP with seven tracks, developing into a well-rounded and self-contained work during the course of 25 minutes.Four "delta"s, or one delta split into four, work as a connecting element for the three further tracks, meandering and spreading between them, similar to a river delta, ever-changing and spreading on its way to the sea, so that each direction of the water develops a different character, depending on its individual journey. Those deltas introduce, lead over and, consequently, lead out again, they maintain the atmosphere and serve as a prospect to what is to come and what has been, while they also function as autonomous pieces.The highlight is reached with "Delta 03" and the following track: the thoughtful and calm, almost closed overall mood, dominating the tracks up to this point (and being supported by the tracks' titles), changes into a something more monumental, darker and eventually more arcane. "Too much traffic, too much to consume" is both mysterious and lively, the cause not solely being the track's diffuse voice samples.

Between improvisation, art, home-recording and academic music studies the experts of Dresden City as well as friends from London, Leipzig, Berlin, Vilnius and Montevideo meet the second time to give some presentation of the state of affairs 2007/2008. We look back at 2007 and at the same time forward to 2008.
One can expect another colorful mixture of styles and sounds. Surprises and diversity can be guaranteed. Deep electronica, Glitch, Acid Bassline, even Rave, lofi electro, smooth IDM, Psybreaks and heart-touching IDM - although the variety is high it is tried to give the whole thing a pleaseant flow.As new friends we can welcome Abyssal Plain from London, who joins with a track from his upcoming Album on Kahvi called "Pictures in Sound" and uruguayan Sound Designer Tinitus from Montevideo, who is already known through netreleases on Ouzo and Monteaudio. With some older track, Phundamental from Vilnius is back on the couch. John Burno and Ð are Pseudonyms of already known artists in the round. With Monostabil, a well-known Noise-Artist is touching the hemispheres of electronica. And Eisenberg, who moved from our regions to London is presenting a wonderful dubby walking house-tune.

A spontaneous Phonocake-'Hear-Around' at the edge 2006 / 2007 is evolved. Stylistically mixed 'colourful', but mostly relaxed and for the experienced listeners, you get a nice mixture of finest artworks from many areas and locations for your ears. Field Recordings, Melodic Electronica, Mysterious Tracks, Psy-Chill, Spheres, but also quite rocking tracks form the compilation's content. Beside our well known buddies, for instance Striesen-Posse or Madstyle, there are also guests from Lithuania and Russia on this compilation. Modul from Krasnodar / Russia is known from our last release, Phundamental from Lithuania will be one of our next releases. The Solar Sound Network is another friendly community from Dresden, mainly in the fields of psy and chill. New as guest in Dresden is swedish resident Christian Björklund, who moved to Dresden and is quite active here; Skies Unlimited is the new combo of phonocake co-founder Roci Hinosch. With this compilation, we also want to show another view inside dresden' music, making an alternative compilation, as an answer to the so called 'Sound of Dresden'-Compilation of the 'Dresdner' culture magazin, where no electronic music is part of it.

You can find a sort of mixture of lofi beats, electro, classical instruments, Hitchcock-Atmospheres, simulated acoustic percussions and much more. Up to now, dancefloor tracks have not really been represented on Phonocake. Those days are over now, though, because Alec Troniq is helping us out there with the latest release: three tracks with a total length of roughly 26 minutes and from a genre that lets quite a few electronica lovers furrow their brows. But no reason to worry: Alec Troniq holds up Phonocake's honor and the love for music, letting us hear uncompromising, but somehow tasty dancefloor, which, by the way, works wonderfully as a soundtrack for riding your bicycle (and for dancing, too), as I tried myself, because all of a sudden you find yourself on the other end of the city owing to the enthusiastic beats.
The obvious length of the tracks doesn't annoy or bore the listener, because Alec Troniq surely knows how to construct a track that keeps up a continuous variation, so that listening to the tracks is entertaining till the end. This is very apparent in the "Eternal Track", which develops into many variations of itself during the roughly eleven minutes of playtime, never reaching a point where you'd want to switch it off. All three tracks use and play with musical elements from different genres, which doesn't allow for an easy categorization into conventional stereotypes. Naturally, thoughts about Ibiza might occur to you while listening to the tracks but hey, that's not really a bad thing, is it?
