People who write-off hip-hop as idiotic, materialistic, violent or misogynistic are only getting a small slice of what it’s about. Since hip-hop has become international there are a wide array of ideas about what hip-hop should be today in 2009 and beyond. Anyone who has ever enjoyed the music will gladly give you their opinion about what “real” hip-hop is. Truth be told, after 30 plus years of existence, there is no “real” hip-hop. Hip-hop emcees, DJs and producers come from all walks of life. With such a wide variety of backgrounds, there can be no definitive hip-hop sound. Since there can be no definitive sound, there’s no reason to disregard hip-hop music that uses classic New York blueprints as the jump off for something fresh and new. Just as there’s a place for rock artists to try and capture a classic 60s and 70s vibe in their new recordings, there’s certainly a place for hip-hop producers, DJs and emcees to try and capture a vibe that’s widely regarded as classic.
With “Classic Material Vol. 3: UI Radio”, CM aka Creative, his various collaborators and producers all present to you hip-hop that’s both new and classic. Musically it reflects back to an early/mid 90s sound, topically, it captures all that a young, struggling and striving American emcee has on his mind. It’s the 3rd part in a series of releases which began at the netlabel Random Flow.
When it became clear to CM that Random Flow had become inactive, he approached me about releasing Vol. 3 through blocSonic. Having enjoyed both Vols. 1 & 2, I was instantly interested. I hope you’ll enjoy this release as much as I do. If you dig it, be sure to check out the previous volumes.
Thanks to CM for coming to blocSonic. Thanks to you for downloading and enjoying. As always, share this release with anyone and everyone.

A producer extraordinaire hailing from London. This here is his premiere solo release and our second original. If you’ve been following our netBloc series for a while, you’ve most-likely heard “Is It Too Late For Us All?” from the collaborative project that he was part of (along with Boston’s own Tha Silent Partner), MUTE. It was featured on “netBloc Vol. 15: this album won’t eat your gas money”. Welcome him back with what I’m quite confident you’ll think is one fantastic release. Hip-Hop on another plain… from another perspective… but real boom bap hip-hop none-the-less. From the introduction “Ebony Shards”… to “X Man”, there’s not a boring or weak moment to be found.
To me “The Overcast Project” feels like the perfect follow-up to Just Plain Ant’s “Dig Deep”. Formula seems to share a similar desire to expand the definition of “hip-hop”. With Formula at it’s core and a talented group of musicians and emcees, Overcast gels into a superbly cohesive unit (much like Ant’s release before it). There IS a “Formula sound” and each of the guest musicians and emcees lend their distinctive touches in such a way as to make the unit stronger.
Sit back and get ready for the journey… the sky may be overcast, but no rain is in the forecast… so enjoy the journey!
Thanks to Formula for allowing blocSonic to handle the release of this gem!
As always, thanks to you for visiting blocSonic and listening to our releases… remember… share this with friends, enemies, parents, siblings, politicians, zombies and aliens… oh… and the rain gods…

In it you’ll find a few high-profile peeps he’s managed to connect with – folks like Boots Riley who you may know from The Coup, Zumbi from Zion-I and Myron Glasper who’s sung background vocals for everyone from MC Lyte to Blackalicious to Lyrics Born. Among the names you may know, you’ll also find incredibly talented MCs and vocalists who you may not know. Once again, blocSonic brings you real hip-hop with a touch of R&B… this fresh sound comes to you straight out of Northern California.
I want to say thanks to ETHX for approaching blocSonic in the first place and his guests for being part of what’s become “Boom To Bloom”. Welcome to the blocSonic fam!
We hope you enjoy this release and it gets heavy rotation in all your portable devices, CD players and computers. If you dig it, don’t forget to spread the word… share it with anyone and everyone you can.

As you may have already figured, you are about to be moved to the obscure side of ambient music. This record comprehends a rich spectre of those elements that formed the genre: dismal drones and dreary pads building up a strong atmosphere, some field recordings, some anthropogenic sound effects deliver deeper immersion. Tracks vary from Eastern flavored solemn compositions with chanting voices, woodwinds and ethnic percussion to mysterious futuristic soundscapes. Overall it is a very strong music set for those enjoying the genre or interested in dark side of atmospheric-driven music.<p>Tags:<a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/browse/release/tag/dark">DARK</a>, This “laglitch EP” could be the presentation of the musical intentions of this trio consisted of 2 rappers, Sano & Chew and [wi-ni] 2.0 in machines. Realized last year, ” laglitch EP ” is a delicious mixture of rap, electro and funk which was of use to them as display, and has also been a way to express everything that made us shout… and, of course, it’s a prelude to what will be in april 2008 their first long playing record. <p>Tags:<a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/browse/release/tag/hip-hop">HIP-HOP</a>, </p><p>License: <a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0">Creative Commons | by-nc-sa</a></p><p>m3u: <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/get/release/m3u/6948">http://sonicsquirrel.net/get/release/m3u/6948</a><br />zip: <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/get/release/zip/6948">http://sonicsquirrel.net/get/release/zip/6948</a></p><p>Release page: <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/detail/release/laglitch+(criu)+ep/6948">http://sonicsquirrel.net/detail/release/laglitch+(criu)+ep/6948</a><br />Label page: <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/detail/label/FreshPoulpRecords/1282">http://sonicsquirrel.net/detail/label/FreshPoulpRecords/1282</a></p>Live at Favela Chic Parishttp://sonicsquirrel.net/detail/release/Live+at+Favela+Chic+Paris/6947Wed, 27 Jan 2010 14:21:11 +0100<h5>released on FreshPoulpRecords by Rafiralfiro vs [wi-ni] 2.0</h5><img src="http://media.sonicsquirrel.net/image/release/6947_RS_75.jpg" /><br /><p>released on FreshPoulpRecords by Rafiralfiro vs [wi-ni] 2.0</p>This fifteenth release for Fresh Poulp is the story of two guys, the french Rafiralfiro and the spanish [wini] 2.0, loving eachother’s music, and willing to share and to mix their identity and their musical skills. After a first and decisive meeting in Alicante ( Spain ) in early fall 2007, they decided to set a live collaboration as soon as possible, startin with a gig in Paris in the first days of 2008. This event could have been cancelled, requested by a pseudo-collective (Amaze) that didn’t respond to their responsability, but it finally happened due to the restlessness of the two artists. This recording is the product of a week of intensive musical preparation to blend their style into one homogenic alloy, cruising from hip-hop to electro, filled with latin explosions and oriental dubby moods…<p>License: <a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0">Creative Commons | by-nc-sa</a></p><p>m3u: <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/get/release/m3u/6947">http://sonicsquirrel.net/get/release/m3u/6947</a><br />zip: <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/get/release/zip/6947">http://sonicsquirrel.net/get/release/zip/6947</a></p><p>Release page: <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/detail/release/Live+at+Favela+Chic+Paris/6947">http://sonicsquirrel.net/detail/release/Live+at+Favela+Chic+Paris/6947</a><br />Label page: <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/detail/label/FreshPoulpRecords/1282">http://sonicsquirrel.net/detail/label/FreshPoulpRecords/1282</a></p>Fake Mediahttp://sonicsquirrel.net/detail/release/Fake+Media/6946Wed, 27 Jan 2010 14:08:45 +0100<h5>released on FreshPoulpRecords by Normaa</h5><img src="http://media.sonicsquirrel.net/image/release/6946_RS_75.jpg" /><br /><p>released on FreshPoulpRecords by Normaa</p>After a first album under the name “Normablock” to the French netlabel Signal Zero and a net ep to the German netlabel Jahtari, Normaa is back for our biggest pleasure. The brother Acosta proposes here a claiming release. The sensations and memories surged out with each and every game I revisited and it kinda gave me a clear idea of where the initial sparks of interest in music came from. I remember hearing "Smoke On The Water" for the first time as a kid and having said to my late father: "These guys stole this theme from Tim Follin and his "Led Storm"!". After much time listening to jazz, jazz-rock, rock, beethoven, contemporary music, etc. I was tired. I no longer listen to music. But one day came to my ears Morton Feldman, Messiaen and Cage and I revived.
I need to get back to the minimum as an exercise to avoid the existential void.
Technical considerations:
I like to divide the computer sound to the classic way. Purely electronic sounds created with Puredata (this is the case) and acousmatic sounds (with samples) with Supercollider.
A simple Python script creates a semi-deterministic score (qlist) for 4 simple puredata generators.

After a bunch of releases on various audio labels such as ropes swing cities, October Man, Hibernate recs and Under The Spire lexithimie’s music creates synthetic spaces from processed instruments, field recordings, layers of repetitive tones and sound infusion.
His two-track EP "Leontopodium" is a beautiful example for this. 24 minutes full of decent soundwalls, layers full of sublime melodies, slightly shifting and processing. The strongest motif in "Leontopodium" is in my ears the aspect of nature. Both tracks have a very organic, warm and natural feeling. They are also perfect examples for building ambient music with minimal structure and melodies, and changing both elements over a long distance of time in a very subtle and gentle way.
So you get the perfect soundtrack for drifting away, coming back and drifting away again. I recommend to listen to this with headphones which let you even more explore the depth and space of Alexis's work.<p>License: <a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0">Creative Commons | by-nc-nd</a></p><p>m3u: <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/get/release/m3u/6904">http://sonicsquirrel.net/get/release/m3u/6904</a><br />zip: <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/get/release/zip/6904">http://sonicsquirrel.net/get/release/zip/6904</a></p><p>Release page: <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/detail/release/Leontopodium/6904">http://sonicsquirrel.net/detail/release/Leontopodium/6904</a><br />Label page: <a href="http://sonicsquirrel.net/detail/label/restingbell/712">http://sonicsquirrel.net/detail/label/restingbell/712</a></p>alw034_Who_am_I_EPhttp://sonicsquirrel.net/detail/release/alw034_Who_am_I_EP/6902Thu, 21 Jan 2010 07:48:32 +0100<h5>released on auflegware by Ryko & Patryk Molinari</h5><img src="http://media.sonicsquirrel.net/image/release/6902_RS_75.jpg" /><br /><p>released on auflegware by Ryko & Patryk Molinari</p>Who I am? or, The House of Dr Faustus
Written, Composed, Performed & Produced by
Ergo Phizmiz
Project consultants
James Nye, Martha Moopette, The Travelling Mongoose
One afternoon Ergo Phizmiz finds himself lumbered into delivering a parcel to the house of legendary alchemist and necromancer Dr Johann Faustus who, since the events of some time ago for which he is renowned, has entered into a rather quieter life in a vast, labyrinthine house, with hundreds of lodgers running the gamut from artists, birds, bird-people, walking fictions, ventriloquists, a Cassowary, running chairs, walking gramophones, and myriad automata.
This enormous dream fable, told through speech, songs, collage and sound-design, is the result of over three years delving down various rabbit-holes, and features collaborations in a range of contexts with artists of many disciplines, including Jack Phoenix, Margita Zalite, Pete Um, Angela Valid, Bela Emerson, Martha Moopette, Amie Willingale, and Zenith Pitts.
In glorious radiophonic technicolour, it is a musical-comedy of disorientation and magick, somewhere between nightmare and the half-remembered childhood whimsy of an insomniac music-hall artiste.
Please note – “The Faust Cycle” is not, necessarily, suitable for sensitive ears at times, containing, as it does, some naughty words, some sexy references, and a healthy smattering of scatological excess.
