These elements never loose focus throghout the EP, giving some room for experimentation and intricate song structure, from time to time revealing a darker side that's somewhat latent on certain songs and create a nice tension between beauty and creepiness. Going back to the roots of a genre is always difficult, for the approach must be very well thought and also respecting the evolution of the genre in question. Well, both IDM freaks and revivalists, rejoyce! There's enough here to please your senses and intrigue your geek side on how Iameb57 accomplished his detailed morphing programming. Keep an eye out on his myspace for other releases. This is very ambient: long, drawn out pieces that evolve slowly, creating quite an emotive and evocative sound. Each piece starts as a blank canvas with no preconceived notion of where the music will go. Notes and noises are played from synths, guitar, voice and samples and fed into one or two loops which repeat and layer and decay. These loops can be quite long, so as a performer I can add notes as I see fit, but only have a certain amount of control over what is heard - the rest is serendipity. Short wave, the radio spectrum between the A.M. and F.M. broadcast bands which is often over looked by must people. This “magic band” provides means of worldwide communications for many of the world’s governments, hobbyist and foreign broadcasters. In this radio spectrum you can here anything from news from around the world to hobbyist conversing about their local culture. But between the numerous transmissions of foreign broadcasters, utility communications and ham radio operators you will sometimes here the unfamiliar sounds of shortwave oddity stations. These unidentified broadcasters, transmittes their signals of unknown origin to an unknown audience. Some speculate that these stations beam their encrypted messages too individuals who are involved in espionage. Others through hard research postulate that their signals are for more sinister reasons, such as mind control. Some of these stations broadcast an undecipherable string of letters and numbers. Others send out nothing more then just a single letter in Morse code, while others are no more then a pulsating buzzing sound. For what ever their means and ways, they are truly weird and mysterious broadcasts that are found in between the noise of the “magic band”. The weird and mysterious broadcasts have intrigued Richard Sudney (a.k.a. Telegraphy) for many years. So he took it upon his self to share his fascination with the obscure by recording these stations and releasing them on metal-oxide-malfunction.Scanning the shortwave band late at night for hours with a vintage cold war military surplus communications receiver, Telegraphy picks out distant weird sounding stations through the noise. “They’ll pop up anywhere at any time”, he says as his hand turns the tuning knob at a slow but constant speed. “I’ll spend hours upon hours hearing nothing but noise and foreign broadcasters, and then when you thought heard enough of pops and crackles though the earphones for one night, there’s the unmistakable sound of a number station or a unidentified data transmission”. Shoving a small pocket voice recorder in front of the receivers speaker he whispers “This is shortwave radio listening at is finest”. Telegraphy will continue to listen late at night for these weird and wonderful broadcasts. In his dimly lit radio room with pocket recorder in hand, he will bring metal-oxide-malfunction more releases of shortwave oddity recordings in the future.

XE releases are meant to give albums, that were originally released on defunct labels or independently, a second chance at getting much deserved shine. Each XE release is packed with the original album, features fresh art and contains at least a bonus disc of exclusive goodies — remixes, outtakes, new tracks & demos. This XE is one very deep set! Coming in at 68 tracks… 3 hours, 9 minutes and 47 seconds in length, there’s little doubt that it’s got something to offer all you groove and beat fiends. Some of you may recognize Tha Silent Partner (TSP) from his work found at Jamendo. Some of you may only know him from his appearances on the netBloc series and the recent maxBloc single “P Pulsar”. Either way, you’re about to get to know his work in a big way, both through his music and through this release’s extensive liner-notes.
27 year old producer/remixer Gregory “Tha Silent Partner” Davis currently calls Boston home, though his roots lie in the UK. He made his first blocSonic appearance back in 2007 on “netBloc Vol. 11: The Raw And The Cooked” with the spaghetti-western flavored “No Mas”. He then re-appeared, along with Unknown aka Formula as MUTE, on “netBloc Vol. 15: this album won’t eat your gas money” with the powerful and soulful “Is It Too Late For Us All?”. Now he’s back with “Tha Complete Platters Sessions XE”.
To understand what the Platters Sessions are all about, here’s a bit of background. Back in 2007, TSP began releasing a series of “Platters” releases via Jamendo and under his label Me, Life & Music. The Platters series were an exploration of vinyl samples based on particular themes. The first installment, “Platters Act. 1 (Lounge Music And Exotica)” featured lush orchestration and smooth rhythms. Then in 2008, the second installment, “Platters Act. 2 (The Untouchables)”, went sort of unreleased (more about that can be found in TSP’s liner-notes). It featured an episode of the TV show “The Untouchables” infused into a sonic world of funky hip-hop beats and jazzy melodies. Finally, in 2009, TSP dropped the third and final act of the series… “Platters Act. 3 (Tape Deck)”, a sort of beat tape, but with a completely unique TSP vibe.
For the first time, “Tha Complete Platters Sessions XE” collects all 3 acts together along with a bonus disc of outtakes from the period, making for an incredible 3CD set of sonic treats! Add to that the maxBloc exclusives on the “P Pulsar” single along with the “Starksy (Featuring Seti A.K.A. K9)” single that’s set to follow this release along with it’s exclusives and you’ve got a whole hell of a lot of new listening!
So what’s contained on this release, you ask? Disc One features the first two acts — “Platters Act 1 (Lounge Music And Exotica)” with it’s dusty, chilled vibe & “Platters Act 2 (The Untouchables)” with it’s exploration of the fusion of story-telling and music. Disc Two contains “Platters Act 3 (TAPE DECK)”… which is a sort of beat tape infused with a sound that’s unique to TSP. Finally, Disc Three contains “Tha Director’s Cut” — 18 bonus previously unreleased tracks that came out of the Platters sessions or were produced for other projects during the same period. This is where you get to hear tracks that feature the vocal skills of lyricists such as Life MC of Phi Life Cypher, Mayhem, Revalation, Seti & HT. On the whole, this is a fantastic collection of adventerous & eclectic music!
I’d also like to mention that there’s one other “first” that this release represents. It’s also the first long form blocSonic release to contain material culled from Gregory’s Me Life & Music label archives. Around the same time that I began thinking about the XE idea and how to best approach it, Gregory made an offer I couldn’t refuse. He offered up complete control of the ML&M archives in order that blocSonic may give that music an online home that could do it justice. I immediately saw the opportunity to work some of the archives into this XE series and here you have one example of what we plan on doing. In the future we plan on releasing other XEs, maxBlocs and Originals that contain material culled from the ML&M archives. A very special thanks to Gregory for the opportunity and the trust that he’s placed in blocSonic! I hope you feel that blocSonic’s done the Platters series justice.

Stuckhousing Quantum Gums/A symphony of composed innovations/Jaan Patterson is one of those rare individuals you come across once in a lifetime who is an innovative and multi-talented master at his chosen field of creative expression/ In this case the composition of passages of sound/ music/ noise/ voice amounting to the construction of an acoustic symphony of visionary extremes/ Not only does he compose/invent the words and “play” all the instruments but produces a final composition that is way ahead of anything else you are likely to hear in his chosen field/His latest work 'Stuckhousing Quantum Gums' is a cross disciplinary exploration of the mythic chthonian forces of contemporary culture and its environment/ As was the Futurist Marinetti to the 20th Century Jaan is an aggressive intellectual phenomenon of the 21Century/ Jaan works within a theoretical and practical framework that seeks to expand the concept of the musical realm using and manipulating a wide selection of sounds/tones/percussive syntax/electronic keyboards and diabolical effects to achieve this effect/ He manages to mould and compose this prodigious orchestra of sonic possibilities into an acoustic heterogeneity of audible pulses pushed to its outer human limits/Jaan Patterson uses noise to make music and music to make a synthetic production of infinitely subtle chromatic refrains/ One must not underestimate the inherent difficulties in maintaining a composition of this complex nature/precise and yet at times bordering on the chaotic/ Great skill is required to fill a passage of music with so many potential orientations/ Be prepared to be confronted with the marginal limits of what might be heard if listened to with imaginative resolution/ From the sparse intensity of the opening passages devising a strained viscosity/a tensity of sounds almost at breaking point/ percussion enters the mix/ the pace increases and pulls away to enter the galaxy of innumerable noise additions/ snatches of ghostly voices/ partial spaces of almost silence fade/ contorted electronics force their way across the membrane of sound puncturing and rupturing the process of “listening” to what might be heard next/ At times the music is primal in its textures creating its own genetic formula as a coda that repeats itself thru out the composition and contributes to maintaining coherence/ if such a state is desirable for we must bring an open mind to the apprehension of this music/ Moving thru tribal beats radically processed/ A certain fragility exists in parts of the composition which is placed against the machinic tones of metal psychodelia/ The mind reels under the attempt to keep pace with the ferocity and paradoxes of the work/ The sacred and the profane present themselves as a dialectic of inserts and intervals drawn from the history of classical and popular music/ Static as parasite vies with sonorant synthesizer notes and the almost operatic background of vocal seductiveness/ The playing with depth and space in the composition is formidable as a technique/ At times the mixing of the sounds foregrounds a particular fragment then suddenly fades it to silence only to replace it with an other enigmatic vocal or insistent instrument/ a trace coming from complex origins bringing with it a sequence of thoughts/images/words/ a rationality of infectious dis-harmony/ ”..that sound can you believe it with their noise pollution”/ The listener is constantly moved from sound to noise to sonic invention of the audible/ The composition seems about to end several times but there is no closure/ Schema follows refrain/ Words dominate the latter part of the work but what are we hearing?/ Words as direct meaning elude the listener/ Several listenings piece together a narrative of recombinant potentials/ Did I hear reality?/ Was that the word “dissipation”?/ Knowing what is not the point/ We are traversing a continent of provocative new sounds that defy explication/ This is what makes the work unique and original/This composition is a fascinating exhumation of the possibilities of what the ear can hear and the mind is able to think of as image/How does it end?/ Abruptly/ One thing is certain/ Jaan Patterson is the Quantum Mechanic of the new symphony of sonic intellectual activity/ This composition brings about an indispensable revolution in the world of sound and word/-Lee Kwo (Bizarre Device)
