Circadian is the sixth full-length album under name Thuoom. The starting point was an hour-long live improvisation played in a cave (Ambient Evening 6, Parainen, Finland). During this event, Tuomo did an a cappella piece while Barque Sound Experiment (aka BSE) played synthesizers. While for most of the tracks there are no hints of synths, two tracks feature BSE sounds extensively. Nevertheless, Tuomo considers this his first a cappella full-length. The end result features more relaxed ambient sounds than the previous release, Fokus.

Instruments used on this record: Human voice alongside Arturia Microbrute Analog Synthesizer & Korg MS-2000, all echoing in a cave.

“Take off and Learning” is the first solo release of TNKS’s guitarist Michele Di Leonardo under his MiDiLe pseudonym. The album is conceived as a three-part cosmic trip including a take-off, learning and final landing. Drawing from his deep and prolonged listening of composers like Krzysztof Penderecki, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Jonny Greenwood, Brian Eno e John Cage, MiDiLe creates and assembles sonic landscapes of different nature, from the cavity-deep, disturbing, voice-haunted, quasi-free-form opening track, “Born Now”, to the soothing guitar arpeggios of An Echoing Spring.

The spacecraft, whatever it may be, is in orbit now and almost marvels at the sight of the multicoloured marbles that are the planets suspended in the cosmic blackness of space. The atmosphere is rarefied here and the sparse synth sounds counterpointing the guitar arpeggios all but highlight the weightlessness of this track.

The third étape in the trip is “Ground Substance”, and almost concrete, tri-dimensional affair in which experimental sounds come and go like brief apparitions of alien beings in an alien jungle. “First Impressions” features clean guitars succumbing to the all-engulfing power of synths that seize the field like swarms of mechanical bees. No rhythm is allowed in this trip, and when the guitar steps in again, creating a semblance of ear-soothing chords, the synths seem to rebel against such normalcy with their cries and hisses.

A subdued, crickety, atmosphere heralds “Time 12.54”, for the first time we have an idea of percussion, as a contrast with the eerie, sparse sounds the track is made up of. Picture yourselves in a gorge on one of the exoplanets MiDile’s trip wants to take us, and you’ll get a fairly accurate idea of what this minimalist piece of music is all about. “Euro Odyssey” has a sort of Zeit-era Tangerine Dream feel to it. No form nor shape for this, the longest track in the album. Just sounds collected and processed during this interstellar trip with a sort of miniaturist feel. The track evolves then into a comet-of-the-mind coda in which prolonged sounds merge and shine, bright and hot, lighting up a new passage or a new universe.

“ViBow” recreates the sounds you could possibly listen to in a spaceship cockpit, or engine room. Noisy and glitch in parts, liquid and soothing in others, in a perfect blend of concreteness in music and electronics. “Phone Arrival” features Flavio Giaimo’s digital piano, whose sound is stretched and processed but not beyond recognition. Our spacecraft has landed, and we are exploring empty rooms wherein each sound echoes and reverberates. Circumspection is of the essence, so the music proceeds in wary steps, careful to look attentively at each dark nook and cranny it could come across.

The last track on the trip, “Surrounding Area” opens with Gabriella Occhino’s piano, whose melody is counterpointed by hovering synths, thus creating the new horizon of the landing. The trip is over, and these notes welcome the travellers...whether back to the place they started from or to a new place they intended to go is yours for the choosing.

Into The Rift Volume Two

The theme “World Wide Storms” for Into The Rift Volume Two, was inspired by looking at the world around us, the events and issues that are facing us. Whether those events are political, social, environmental, or something else, everyone has been touched by some looming storm in front of us.

Part of the fun in making a theme like this was that it left the artists open to interpretation. It could be literal, metaphor, allegory, or any of other ideas that the artists had in mind. And there are fifteen very different perspectives on the storms in our world today.

But there is also a consistency to this release. It’s not just a collection of recordings thrown together. Each artist has contributed a work that fits within the theme, making for a recording that is more experience than it’s predecessor.

The seventeen tracks on Into The Rift Volume Two represent a lot of different thoughts on the world, right now. But, I am optimistic about one thing: this is a work that will transcend current events. In the United States right now there are many references in the media to the Watergate scandal of President Nixon. There is more than one reason for this: (a) it was recently the anniversary of the event, (b) it was also the anniversary of the film All The President’s Men, which was made about the scandal, and (c) there are some people that are drawing parallels between our current administration and the Nixon administration.

I cannot judge if the comparison between Nixon and Trump are appropriate. However, I can tell something: events that cloud our history tend to come up again. And, I believe that many of the issues touched on this release will come up again: climate issues, environment issues, social issues, etc. So many of these things seem to have transcended time over the decades. And, for better or worse, I think this release will be relevant in the future.

In our feature release for Netlabel Day 2017, Frau Holle presents his debut at Toucan Music with ten inspiring instrumental electronica tracks combining the sounds of 21st Century chilled trance and house music with classic analog synthesizer music from the 1970s and 1980s.

Ascending Souls introduces Holle's sound, featuring bleepy arpeggios, haunting pads and warm, uplifting chords. The tempo drops for the two part Quasar, a chilled yet atmospheric piece retaining the uplifting melodies of Holle's signature sound. Increasing the pace, Big Rip and Propaganda Machine introduce stuttering trance gates and house rhythms, the latter starting with a darker, more intense vibe with classic analog synth riffs building in towards the end.

Chasing Rainbows brings back the haunting melodies with beautiful pads, adding punchy electro beats. With a slightly darker groove, The World Around You is slower paced and begins with continually shifting acidic riffs and evolving beats, building up with trance pads into an uplifting and atmospheric vibe. Continuing the downtempo theme, Sweet Passage starts with an acidic bassline, tribal rhythms and haunting pads with a slightly sinister edge. The rhythms and pads build before a piercing synth riff hits halfway through the track. Electric Charge features a strong beat with acoustic influences and runs with mellow synth chords.

The album concludes with Discharge, a chilled, mellow and uplifting piece, ideal for relaxation and reflection, bringing together the signature elements of Holle's sound for one last time - subtle arpeggio rhythms, warm synth melodies and atmospheric pads.

Night On The Great Beach

Scott Lawlor is a sonic explorer of great skill and knowledge. For this work he found a passage in The Outermost House: A Year of Life On The Great Beach of Cape Cod by Henry Beston that was appealing to him and set out to interpret it as an audio work.

This work is comprised of three pieces, the titles of which are each a passage from the book: “…they fear, rather, the energies and creatures to whom night gives power.” and “Yet to love thus, to know only artificial night is as absurd and evil as to know only artificial day.”

Stylistically this work is reminiscent of 1970’s Klaus Schulze recordings, like Timewind.

Drone Thoreau One

Drone Thoreau One is not a finality, but hopefully a beginning…

SoundChaser has been fascinated with the concept of transformation. Especially with the concept of taking a single piece of source audio and transforming it into something completely different, something that is un-recognizable from it’s original form. This release is exactly an example of such a transformation.

Starting with a public domain reading of Henry David Thoreau’s Woof of the Sun, SoundChaser took the recording and mangled, manipulated, chopped up, layered, and reassembled it into a work that is completely different from what it started off as. And, after completing transformation he found that he couldn’t leave well enough alone, and further modified two of the layers, which produced a second version that is nearly identical and yet different from the first version.

So, Drone Thoreau One version 1 & 2 form the main listening portion of this release. However, here is where the fun begins: SoundChaser has decided to go a step further by including all the original stems (layers) of the tracks used to create this release. There are two reasons for this:

SoundChaser believes some people might enjoy listening to the individual stems on their own (especially the Drone stem, which gets mixed into the background in the main tracks), and

He wants others to take the tracks and create their own works. Fold them, spindle, mutilate them, add beats, add other instruments, make them into something else. The less recognizable, the better.

(NOTE: The Stems have been moved to a separate release: Drone Thoreau One STEMS, catalog No CAST0001.)

But, as the name implies, this is only the first of a series of recordings. The concept is to explore what can be done with single audio source. This first release uses very simple production techniques. Each release will use additional tricks, techniques and tools to produce different results.

The idea is to build towards creating a new style of work that is still ambient, drone and experimental, but isn’t like anything that is being produced today. Something that will hopefully inform or inspire someone else to do something new. So, have at it, see what else can be created from this work.

Dominic Razlaff (aka DR) returns to CerebralAudio with a new release: This Way.

Dominic’s minimal approach to drone music makes for excellent listening any time: driving, or studying, working or meditating.

This Way is a statement about music, and particularly drone works. He is sticking close to the original Brian Eno inspired concept of drone works: they should be minimal in terms of structure and movement. They have the capacity to both be listened to and ignored at the same time. Ambient music by it’s very nature, is an audio experience that enhances the environment.

While many ambient artists have broken from the original concept of ambient music (some very successfully, some not very successfully) Dominic has decided to show use the way with This Way.

It was Around 2,600 years ago when a Judean teenager was taken captive by the rapidly ascending Babylonian Empire, a force of unstoppable military strength, great wealth and technological advancement. Normally such an event would lead to a life in misery as a slave … but God had something else in mind for this young man named Daniel.

Daniel, the teenager who had been taken captive, came to realize that God was miraculously working with him … but not only to preserve his life. God was revealing through him some major prophecies of future world-ruling empires. As a resident of the world’s premier capital city and AS an honored wise man in King Nebuchadnezzar’s court, Daniel demonstrated God’s superiority over the pagan gods of Babylon and left a legacy of faithful obedience to God in spite of grave trials and tribulations.

Inspired by the Old Testament book, Italian producer Orlando La Montagna adapts the story of Daniel and transforms it into a dub adventure, introducing different variations of the same riddim just like the different chapters of the book. Each track has a deep spiritual ambience; starting with “Induction in Babylon” where Daniel is introduced in the hard Babylonian system through a stepper-techno beat and ending with “Life Giver”, which sends the final message to our permissive society of power-hungry people … to a nation without God. Daniel's situation in Babylon sounds quite a bit like our own, doesn’t it?

Ascending Souls is a chilled electronica track with bleeps and chilled electronic beats breaking into beautiful chord melodies reminiscent of early analog synthesizer music.

STREPITVSITVS is the new realisation of musical duo ASOLANMAC PROJECT and meant to be a sort of inner self-reflections as well as a very personal study about environmental connections between people and places: the focus is set on the Montello hill, near the Piave river,
pretty close to our hometown. It's a really peculiar site, where nature, hystory, legends and mysteries are all mixed up together in a unique way.
This piece of music fully represent the feelings we share
about it and express also the will to define the whole thing like the primal step of an introspective journey through memories and sensations, inspired by that magical location, under the form of an audio description.

Four years ago, back in 2013, the Argentinian dubbers Negritage made their first appearance on the label with “Guetto Roots of Dub Vol. 1”, an album recorded in “Cuca Roots” and in “El Fuerte Dub Foundation” studios, exploring the Jamaican roots and culture dub tradition. Their analogue style and their authentic sound was greatly appreciated by the listeners and the album remains until today the most downloaded release ever made by Dubophonic, with more than 25.000 downloads and still rising.

Fast forward today and the long awaited Vol. 2 is finally out. “Greetings from Planet Dub” stays true to the same roots and culture background with 6 vocal tracks and 11 dubs. Nevertheless new elements are incorporated in their style, in which eastern melodies blend into the Jamaican vibes and the melodica meets the mandolin and the lyre like in a musical playground, were the singers and players of instruments playfully communicate through their music.

Big up all the artists from all four corners of the world, who collaborated with Negritage and made this release possible: the original roots defender dub activist Jam York (USA), the mighty Sammy Gold (UK), the wise Ibel Campbell (JAM) delivering solid and conscious messages, the dub poet and writer Haji Mike (CY), the studio wizard and dub creator Med Dred (CY), sister Yuuri Bamboo (JAP) blazing those melodica vibes, Christina Polycarpou (CY) doing her magic on the lyre, the humble Mandlion (ITA), flute master Eter Dub (ARG) and the lyrical messenger Zion Irie (FR).

Two classic Redmann tracks are revisited in this release with new mixes fresh for 2017 from Notch. Turn The Corner receives an update in progressive house style, with the original piano lead, female vocal sample and pads being layered with updated beats, flanging effects and a large, filtered supersaw arp riff. Notch stays true to the original with Plastic Explosive, keeping the stuttering gated trance chords and adding contemporary house beats and layering in more pads and deeper bass. Accompanying the remixes are bonus remastered versions of the original 2002 mix of Turn The Corner and the original breakbeat cut of Plastic Explosive from 2006.

Three years after their debut album (‘Gate One’, released by Sucu Music as SCM-1405), TNKS come back with their second effort, ‘Nostalgic Happiness’. The music on offer here is a very good blend of electronics and melody, with a lot of space provided by soundscaping guitars and sequenced synthesizers.
Not a frontal attack to the listener’s synapses, but a tentacle-like embrace of their aural dimensions and souls.

The initial ‘Panic Room’ sports some jerky saxophone on an up-tempo, stop-and-go beat that invites to dance on a dance floor on the sea. The melody is sweet but not syrupy, and the somewhat anarchic interventions from the sax grant an unexpected level to the whole track.

‘Freetrip’ is a hypnagogic soundtrack to an imaginary ride on an air ocean. Minimal melodies and guitar arpeggios, interspersed with glitch rhythm and, again, the unexpected saxophone affirming subdued statements that nobody could ever contradict.

We pass through the rhythmic pulse of ‘Mechanical Bike’, issued by the band as a videoclip.

If nostalgic happiness is what this work tries to evoke, there’s no point in it where it is clearer than in ‘G3X’, what with the distant guitar chords and the bass drum dictating a mid-tempo beat that is able to conjure up gone days one will never forget.

‘Comfortable,’ the track that TKNS have also issued as a single, shows eighties-sounding synth chords and a dripping rhythm introduce a minimal melody which could come from an old videogame as much as from a memory of a hand-in-hand walk with a childhood sweethearts.

‘Stilo Silence’ is the most atmospheric track in the album. Sparse sounds, a sparse snare drum, guitar chords that drip like water, a sort of lullaby for future nights on the first human colony in open space, under the vigilant eye of some ringed star.

The chilled out beat of ‘Night Floor’ closes the work, where synths sound like distant trumpets on children voices and radios speaking from afar.

Memories frozen in time by gentle electronic sounds that wrap you up and highlight how much the band has improved their sound, writing, and approach in three years’ time.

A “quipu”, was a method used by the Incas and other ancient Andean cultures to keep records and communicate information. In the ancient Quechua language of the Andes, “quipu” means “knot”. A Quipu is in fact a set of knotted loops, tied by a thicker rope supporting them.

Quipu is also a project created by Atome Primitf, a collective of musicians and "dreamers" from Europe, a project inspired by that same method of knots, stringing artistic ties and new collaborations, through cross-genre musical interpretations and audio-visual concepts.

In fact Quipu was born as an audio-visual concept. The four tracks of the EP started as original compositions of Atome Primitif, with the elements of voice, violin and acoustic guitar modeling an unplugged sound. Quipu traveled all around Europe, involving artists from different countries, each one adding their own personal knot, inspired by the compositions of Clelia Patrono.

Andrea Presicce aka No Finger Nails adds his own musical knot through his musical experience, ranging from Electronica to Dub. The EP consists of four remixed tracks, offering a very dub-ambient and mystical alternative, using the original organic sounds. The project expands also audio-visually, with videos and visuals being produced, on that same quipu idea. Dubophonic is very proud and honored to be part of this, tying its own knot in this continuously evolving project!

Split album “Deformation” consists of two "bonus" tracks, which were conceptually dropped from the current project material [mikra] and Izvнe. It turned out that the split all began to sound harmoniously and acquired its completeness.
