What is psychedelic music in the third millennium like?
What can be defined as such? Who is the psychedelic musician today?

Is he who takes up his instrument and tries to sound the same as early Pink Floyd, or early Soft Machine, or Grateful Dead, you name it?

Or is he who tries to translate the spirit of 1960's psych rock according to the spirit of the time he lives in? Psychedelic music was not about tradition.

Psychedelic music was all about innovation, the use of state-of-the-art technology and the opening of the musical mind, so that new, theretofore unheard-of territories could be mapped and revealed to the world. (I can hear you, can't I, protesting there was also drugs in the menu. Of course there were drugs, but it's music we're speaking of here, ain't we?) I think this is that psychedelia is all about, not playing the umpteenth cover of Astronomy Domine (unless your name is Nick Mason and your band's called A Saucerful of Secrets, that is, but that's another story), but approaching music in the same spirit of yore, using nowaday's state-of-the-art technology and inventiveness.

This is what Francesco Lenzi does in his latest release, in the truest psychedelic spirit. Playing his guitars, he offers us a remarkable palette of psychedelic sonic landscapes with no traces of a song format (which even the most famous bands cited above were sometimes reluctant to leave behind) and no clear rhythm pulsations, unless they serve to deconstruct what, in other hands, might have turned out as a hip-hop track. Echoes of shoegaze in its wildest forms can be heard here and there (My Bloody Valentine?), and there is also room for gentle acoustic guitars and field recordings of birds twittering and other assorted natural sounds (mutatis mutandis, in the same realm as Grantchester Meadows, of Ummagumma fame)

The tracks follow one upon another in a sonic stream of consciousness wherein moods are skilfully alternated, from grating, glitching, harsh noises, to placid descents into 'caves measureless to man', if some poetry can be of help. And, when the resonation of the last sound in the album gives way to silence, one is left with the desire to continue the voyage and start listening again. No mean feat, I can assure you.

This first Orognon Sound Machine’s release on Sucumusic, out for the Netlabel Day 2019, aims to be what the title suggests: a dangerous overload of radiations.
That’s what you’ll be exposed to.
The creative mind of Salvatore, behind the project, lets us exlopre what pure instinct and composition flow means in electronic music. So you can’t say if you’re listening to IDM, breakbeats, industrial or some kind of weird dance music, coloured sometime by ninety-ish rhythmic and synths shades.
Often, the inspiration for a track starts from some sample sources on which the artist build his blurred sounds visions. More often this compositional happenings start and end in one session.
Every information and content can contribute to the creational process, so you will find tracks inspired not only by musicians and sound artists, but even by writers, painters, visual artists, for impossible – never completed – EP’s, all collected here to witness that the artist’s mind eye needs space and never stops looking around in search for something to satisfy his hunger.
Despite of different genres you will find in this album, you can easily feel a trait d’union: the precise will to create music letting instinct, rather than the rational brain, be the leader.
Wherever this may take, we can assure you that it will be a deep deep trip anyway.

Thuoom is back from studio hiatus with his 7th full-length album, Organism. The sounds used on this record consist 100% of glitches. More precisely, the original sounds were produced by misusing a sound card and manipulating signal live during a practice session, soundcheck, and live performance (Ambient Evening Trashure Islands, Parainen, Finland) in November 2018. For the album, these sounds were then further mutated in a true Thuoom fashion.

Redmann's 2003 track Scratching The Surface gets a remake fresh for 2019. The Notch mix is an uplifting house cut with smooth pads and strings alongside the classic vocoder vocals, breaking down with a spiky analog synth riff. Phish Funk have blended in disco elements to their version of the track which features funky bass, rhythmic guitar riffs and plenty of phaser action.

All tracks are produced whilst travelling in intercity trains - between the year of 2017 and 2019, using a laptop and headphones. Each piece includes an audio recording, of the atmospheric sound, from the respective train in which it was produced.

The results went to different video artists. All of them individually received their single audio track, without any guidelines and without knowing the other tracks or videos. In consequence of this, five totally unique videos occurred.

Breathe 01 is the first of a series of compilation albums spotlighting independent artists in the ambient, IDM and electronic genres. There are 24 artists and over 2 hours of soundscapes. The atmosphere is generally on the dark side, introvert and meditative although you can almost detect a danceable pulse in some of these tracks. I didn’t find any one tune that really knocked me over but, having listened to the entire album non-stop, I could detect a resulting altered state somewheres between a hot bath and a night in a haunted mansion. This is musical acupuncture for your head. - Free Albums Galore

The fewest probably know dead silence. It is possible theoretically, but perhaps just in the context of an experimental set-up with specifically prepaired rooms. The missing of any sound is confusing, it causes oppressive feelings and it is supposed to be tolerable only for a short period of time.

But normally we are, whether we want or not, surrounded by sounds, which sum up to an endless and continuously morphing sound collage. We even have genres for that like “Streetnoise” or “Whispering Trees”. We notice the surrounding noises more or less consiously, depending on our sensibility. But always it is the essential basis for the functioning of our sense of orientation. But wouldn’t it be an enrichment to perceive these sound incidents not just for live saving, but also for aesthetic reasons? To recognize their musical side?

Theodor Steiner’s tracks were recorded during a jam session, which took place in a flat in Cologne (Germany) in April of the year 2017. The cover of the release shows the painting he made from the view he had along the way. Pretty close to the urban centre it seems. But unlikely, that he was driven by similar thoughts like those I’ve described above to start his improvisation. It’s more likely that it just happened. By the way: Theodor was performing with a wink. The second track ends with a kind of wake-up call, which bursts the soundtrack-like character of the music in an ironical way and quits the illusion of apparently continuous, just slowly changing soundstreams surprisingly.

But who knows: Maybe unconsciously the musical impression of his surroundings had an influence on him. For me the tracks definitely sound like the amplified background noise of a day, whose mood, rhymthm and complete dramaturgy suddenly get audible. Like Theodor wouldn’t have send his bass sound through the distortion, but the music of the city.

A heavy-hitting masterpiece that deserves some recognition. Hatch (aka London’s Eugene Rowlett) could have easily been pulled for a Gescom or Fear Ratio collaboration where large sandblasted electro rhythms smash against acid, funk, hip-hop, and ultra wide basslines.

Eleven tracks spread across old-school breaks and low-end vibrations, Hatch manifests the grit, debris, and robust machine rhythms from start to end. A stream of melodic slivers glide through each piece as thick drums punch through at every angle. Some tracks are faster-paced electro shards such as the aptly titled and powerful “Hatch-Hop” which could easily be its own genre—massive kick-drums, heavy bass thuds, and a menacing groove.

“Dopple” drenches the above-mentioned styles into the shadows with a darker surrounding strain. “Extroliated” maneuvers its acid line through snappy percussive rhythms that mid-90s Plastikman fans would have eaten up. Slowing the production to a walking pace, “Block” drives through downtempo corridors where ambient sheets and wind instruments float to the surface while heavyweight drums take center-stage.
There are a few samples strewn in here and there as noted on the excellent “We Can Make It”—where wide-angled percussive jolts bust through the acidic undercurrent. Arcanoid is definitely a highlight for 2018, its breaks, bass, 808s, and hatch-hop blend of graffiti electro is a welcomed addition to the digital library. (igloomag.com)

In Stephen Briggs's own words, the seven tracks included in his latest effort for Sucumusic, “Earthbound”, show “the true New Zealand.

The scenery, the emotions, the feeling, the atmosphere, the relief, the flow, the space, the sun, the sky, the glow”. His live looping and guitar playing create soundscapes which bring the term 'psychedelic' right into its truest meaning, that of inner revelation and expansion of conscience and mind.
And if the title of the album takes the listeners onto the earth, the music flies them up to whatever stratosphere one is willing to choose, be it with the harsher, distorted sound of the leading guitar in the opening track, 'Wahine 1966', or the delicate arpeggios of the title track itself.

Music to dream to, to watch sunsets to and wonder about all the secrets of creation.
Music which expands in circles like ripples on a cosmic pond, with a number like 'Ahuriri,' which bans every notion of rhythm because the only beat permitted here is that of our inner psyche, which cannot be measured in bars and signatures.

The twenty-one minute epic 'Sugar Loaf' combines gentleness and darkness. The sounds are always dilated, boundless, but they are sounds which keeps the listeners alert nonetheless, as if some surprise should lurk behind each corner, and the overall effect is of subdued, choral magnitude.
A sense of worship and devotion informs the aptly-titled 'Sacred Hill', and 'Seafield', the last number on the bill, offers to take the listener away along dark currents of sounds whose promises are of further jewels yet to come.
