“The Place It Used To Be” is the first release of Cousin Silas under Sucu Music. In his own words: “[The tracks] are all aural sketches of a place I used to go to as a kid.
It's basically a small valley, a stream running through it and an old mill that had just closed down not long after we moved there. Very peaceful place”.

The album opens with “Autumn arrives”. A soft, soothing layer of synths which brings our imagination through scrubs of trees barely moved by a gentle wind, forefront of a coming season of mists and light rains.
The second track is the natural prosecution of what we heard in the previous one, but here the synths soon introduce us to a clean guitar which marks its own rarefied tempo, just like floating leaves carried by a river “Under Marrydale bridge”. Almost at the end a piano appears, only to vanish just seconds later leaving only a trace of reverb, de facto ending the track.

“Hangmans moor” is a quiet, desolated place shaped by synths and guitars, only momentarily revived by a couple birds passing by, after which everything comes back to its initial state of total, utter calm.

“Relics from the old dam” is a lullaby in the form of a piano ostinato upon which Silas creates sweet harmonies at first with the piano itself, then by his guitar and - in the last part – by a string section which fades into a bird singing as it was itself the final instrument of the track.

“The old waterwheel” is literally a track almost dunked in water. The sense of liquidness is perceived through all the development of the track, not only thanks to the bubbly synth pad but also via the drowning of the delayed guitar and piano notes in an enveloping reverb.

The long evolving “The stream never froze in winter” marks the exact center of the album, like a slow flowing river that separates a snowy plain in two white banks.
The over 12 minutes epic “The deserted valley” leads us in a long flyover upon an empty landscape where everything is calm and quiet, with just the sound of a dripping piano that falls every now and then like water cumulating on a leaf and then overflowing down.

“The evening falls”, another over 10 minutes track, is one of the richest in terms of pure sound with moments where synths, pianos and guitars alternates in beautiful textures. Here the middle section serves as a breather as everything comes quiet for a while, only to take off again after a pair of minutes.

A sense of bliss greets us at the beginning of “Walking home”, a melodical unveiling of our own sanctuary, of the place where we can stay safe and free, of the place we can call our shelter: home.

Things gets spacey with the next track, remembering a time when you sat in your porch under a clear night sky and watched the world around you… and “The stars shone brighter”.

“At last the day is done…” is the conclusion, the goodbye. It’s time to close our eyes and enjoy the ending credits to these 78 minutes of walk down Cousin Silas’ memory lane.

The Midnight EP

The second in a series of EPs available on mini CD and download from Bing Satellites.

The Midnight EP features two tracks - 20 minutes of chilled experimental ambient soundscapes.

Towards the end of 2013, I lost interest in improvising (although not for long!) and looked for new ways of creating music.

The first track, Fifteen Below, uses the same generative processes I use to create music for my side projects The Lovely Moon and The Ambient Visitor but is less melodic. There are hints of notes but the whole thing is more atmospheric than musical. It is likely to be something I do more of in the future.

The music for the second track, Midnight, is directly derived from the first few lines of The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe, using the same method I used for Metamorphosis of Narcissus from the EP In response to...Salvador Dalí. This is an interesting method which produces oddly timed and intriguing melodies that would not otherwise occur.

And yes, it is likely I will do more songs like this.

The E.P. was produced with the aid of an amplifier circuit housed inside an old cigar box. Sounds were created using resonant-spring contact microphones and circuit-bending body contacts to create piercing feedback loops, analog glitches and temporal sub-harmonics.

JMD takes the hypnotic vocals of Catch My Fall and adds pumping EDM beats, large trance arpeggios and plenty of reverb to create an anthemic big room sound. Despite the oceans' dominant role in energy storage, the term "global warming" is also used to refer to increases in average temperature of the air and sea at Earth's surface. Since the early 20th century, the global air and sea surface temperature has increased about 0.8 °C (1.4 °F), with about two-thirds of the increase occurring since 1980. Each of the last three decades has been successively warmer at the Earth’s surface than any preceding decade since 1850.

This music is minimalist and rough , but it makes your head swing to the beat, as much as it makes you feel the rhythm whistling in the pipes, gurgling in the tap, dripping like raindrops on the window sill, cats meowing and the fridge purring. All this turns into a rhythmic march of existence, the music of a musical box, or crammed tricky electronic circuits. As if robots were singing an ode to existence.

The first track, "Cavitation," begins with a bass drum, which is typical for dance music, but then the space is filled with high-frequency drones, additional percussion, drum machines, and processed dub effects. Reverb and echo are imposed on, Jamaican style, nevertheless the music does not evoke the island. What we have here are man-made landscapes, basements, ceilings, embroidered with endless highways of pipes. If you listen to acoustic spaces in basements and boiler rooms, they’re very similar to the drones superimposed on top of the mechanical repetitive, mocking, industrial drum machine here.

"Wasp Plexus": Oscillator synthesizers subject to the law of random modulation. Now the oscillation frequency is smooth, then it is fast. This creates a foreground and a background. In the background there are stars and cosmic infinity, constantly randomly varying metallic squares are featured in the foreground. A space like a swarm of wasps, swirling fractal sets, the dangerously approaching buzzed overtones. It is not clear where the deep postpones the Low Pass Filter.

"Cat on Rusty Tubes": The track is filled with an original sequence which is subject to the same random modulation, thus demonstrating the broad scope of this method to create atonal music. Going further into the composition, we find a meowing-cat-like synth, more similar to a prolonged roar, sometimes appearing in the drainpipes network. All of this is flavored with generous strokes of solo drums created by the noise generator, and the resonant sounds of an analog synthesizer, as always bursting suddenly and suddenly disappearing.

For the release of this mini album we are happy to introduce the first collaboration between Cyprus and Jamaica on our label. The conscious lyrics of the Spanish Town singer and poet Ibel Campbell blend with the musical compositions of Med Dred, accompanied by some exclusive dubs by Med Dred and Dub Caravan inna dubophonic style.

Born the eighth day of December 1967, at the Kingston Jubilee hospital, the Jamaican artist Ibel Campbell was registered ‘Scafford Campbell’ and is the first of miss Antoinette three children. His father died when he was just a toddler and grandma had to lend a hand with his growth and development. She resided in St. Thomas thus most of his earlier years were spent in the country. He began doing his own business of ‘heart’ –portraits, murals, t-shirts, backdrops, performing on the first and second staging of ‘East Fest’, recorded ‘Babylon a duppy’ at ‘Pent house’ studio for the Morgan’s heritage, is the first dub poet featured by ‘Jammin’s label with a tune called ‘travel the world’ done with ‘Bushman’ and is also the artist responsible for the art on the jacket of Taurus Riley’s first album. As a writer and poet he has written a book ‘Deep within Blackness’ soon to be in stores. He hopes his works will keep Blacks from slipping below their standard while making way over and around obstacles presented by a system without a face or a fixed address.

The internet highway made possible to meet at the other side of the globe our own Med Dred, who wrote for him the music for this mini album. The two bredrens used the internet to exchange their material. The music was composed and recorded in Cyprus, the vocals were recorded in Jamaica Spanish Town at Rippas Production and the whole project was finalised in Med Dred studio in Nicosia, Cyprus. Musical data travelled again from Cyprus to Dub Caravan’s studio in London, where a special version of “Protect me” was live dubbed and then forwarded back to Cyprus for the final mastering.

One last word about the credits on this release: all music written, produced, mixed & mastered by Med Dred while all vocals written and performed by Ibel. Med Dred played melodica on the dubs and percussion on “Protect me”, Kyp Paraskeva played electric guitars on “Rise” and Felix Dub Caravan played guitars & bass on “Protect me”. Deepest respect to our bredren Felix Dub Caravan for providing us “Protection dub”, a live analogue dub cut of “Protect me”, which is included as a special bonus track.

It's pretty much a soundtrack to a movie that never was and never will be. Yet we can get a glimpse of it by exploring the palette of sounds and listening to every note closely - there are landscapes and images, characters and stories, scenes and moods. There are calls and echoes. So, after all that film probably does exist.
